How To Install Third Age Total War
What is Third Age? and what do I need to have information technology?
This guide is outdated. For an easier to use, steam compatible installation see here:

Foreword
For some esoteric reason a good number of M2TW installations do non accept the executable rename method non the standard BAT\desktop curt cut method. Information technology seems to be connected with the servers the installation gets downloaded but this couldn't be confirmed.
With that in heed this guide has been set up.
Intro
For those poor, clueless, people who don't know what "Third Historic period" is, it's a complete overhaul for Medieval: II Total War. And it'south peachy (minus a couple of pocket-sized issues).
As for what you will need, this guide assumes y'all take Med Two AND the Kingdoms Expansion, both on Steam. You volition likewise demand a decent internet connection, or else it'll take well-nigh x years to download. :P
Getting the files
Okay, so you want it but have no clue where to get the files. Well, your best bet is off moddb ;
http://world wide web.moddb.com/mods/third-age-full-war
Scroll down, ignore all the marketing :P until you get to the Download Links bit.
Yous'll get 3 files off at that place:
1) The three.0 part 1 installer
two) The 3.0 part 2 installer, and
3) The three.2 patch installer.
They are large files (by my standards :P) totally nigh 4GB in size; that's why you demand a decent internet connection. :P
You may get a message proverb yous need to be a member. Not so! Shut that message, and click on the Download push again. And so quickly (before the message comes up) click on the "Try some other mirror" text at the top right of the popup. From that you lot can choice a mirror that DOESN'T crave a membership.
You also want this bug fix[www.twcenter.net]. That's the original topic yous can read, however this link [www.dropbox.com] has all the files you need.
This is a rather puny file in the order of 0.1MB, something even MY internet could download in less than an hour. :P But what'southward this? .rar ? What is THAT? Is information technology a flake similar a .zip?
Yep. To extract it you can practice ane of iii things:
1) Google .rar extractor and go the least trustworthy site bachelor (non recommended :P)
2) Use 7-nix[www.7-zip.org].
3) Use Universal Extractor[world wide web.legroom.net].
Either style, yous'll have the files out in no time.
Installing it
You lot have all the files, you accept a dainty shiny copy of Med II and the Kingdoms expansion, but you have no clue what to do.
One; You can view this video, or two, y'all can read the text beneath it.
Showtime the starting time .exe installer: that's 3.0, function one. Read the license, click aye, click side by side, until it comes upwards with the spot where yous want TA to be installed. It will come up with something funny ranting about SEGA past default. That's because they oasis't bothered updating it for Steam users.
You lot want this to become to your Steam directory. That'southward by default "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Medieval II Total State of war." Nevertheless, anybody either a) with Vista or b) is sensible will have moved the game directory out of Program Files as Microsoft doesn't want you lot meddling there.
If you lot can't be bothered moving it, it's okay. It'south but you lot'll take to click "Yes" several times to various security things.
Anyhow, you're up to entering the directory fleck in.
You want it to go to the folder that looks similar this:
You'll see how information technology says "Medieval II Full State of war" upwardly the superlative. (Zambezi is the bulldoze I apply for storage, deal with it :P) So if you want it to go to this folder, you'd type in something like this:
If it comes up and tells you "This folder doesn't be. Do you want the directory to be created," exercise Not click Yep: You've washed something wrong.
You exercise Not want to install it into the "mods" folder. NO. That will create Some other sub-folder chosen "mods" and you'll accept to do a lot of working around that.
One time that's finally finished (if it stops responding, leave it exist: it'll sort itself out. Unless it's taken three days, in which case you lot have a problem. :P), guess what?
Practice the SAME Thing with the 3.0 Role ii installer.
And the Aforementioned Thing with the three.2 patch installer.
In that order, please.
The side by side section contains bits that may make multiplayer dysfunctional. At this bespeak, your best movement is to re-create your TATW folder and paste information technology, then you accept two copies. I can be used for multiplayer and the other one volition have a far better SP campaign experience.
Go out the one yous designate for multiplayer.
The one that you lot desire to be your SP campaign map, you lot need to patch the 3.ii patch with those Essential Bugfixes.
Extract them out of that pesky .rar format (Why tin't people just use a .nada, I don't know... ) and then open "Readme.txt" or any it's called.
Do what it says for the get-go and second points. Equally for the third, get-go discover Map.rwm and delete it. For " *strings.bin " , that means "Anything ending in blahblahblahwhateveryoulikegoeshere__strings.bin" (You're looking at stuff like battle.text.strings.bin for your information) . HOWEVER, deleting all the stuff tha ends in strings.bin volition break a DaC installation but is still a proficient idea for TATW three.2 . Your best bet is to copy out your TATW folder once again and only edit one. Stuff a small text document in i maxim "Anything that ends in strings.bin has been deleted" and something that says "This has however got its strings.bin" in the other, and if you like install DaC on acme of that one. (Cheers for Barras for earthworks this up to me!)
Finishing off installation and playing information technology
If you lot accept run the installer and installed the game as mentioned in the video in a higher place. Then all you need to do is run the .bat file within the mod folder and/or the shortcut that was provided to y'all on your desktop.
Equally mentioned by Arachir in his installation video. Using the renaming method is primitive. Information technology was the original method for launching Steam mods that acted a little funnily. In these aware times we no longer need the method. It still works, simply it has problems of its ain.
Specifically, Steam will choice upward these files as "right files" and when y'all try to reinstall it will reinstall your mod. This is not a problem if your mod is working fine. If information technology isn't - typically the time when you want to reinstall - it prevents you from actually running M2. The solution is to go out M2TW uninstalled for 30.00 days, at which bespeak Steam will actually start downloading the "proper" files again.
If yet, you do desire to rename your folder, do follow his little section on that.
ADVANCED way of running 3rd Historic period
You can run the game via the folder renaming listed to a higher place. This section is a slightly more than technical of running TATW that some people like.
If y'all just want to become TATW working, don't use this method.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=290002657
as well as Inardesco, who rants nearly it regularily :P
but the method's hardly copyright. :P (he has method 1 which is fussy; I'yard using method 2)
Anyhow, what to exercise:
1) Rename your Third Age folder dorsum to Third_Age_3 or something memorable. In this instance, I'll use ThirdAgeTW as the proper noun for my folder.
two) Go over to your Steam Library. Right-click Medieval II and select Backdrop.
3) Go to General, and click "Set Launch Options." Yous should get a trivial box pop-upwardly, complaining that "these options are for advanced users but." Well, I did say...
4) Add this:
--features.mod=mods/WHATEVER.You.NAMED.YOUR.Third.AGE.FOLDER.TO
then in my case I add
--features.modernistic=mods/ThirdAgeTW
and then click Ok.
Alternatively, y'all can create a desktop shortcut for the Medieval2.exe and paste the launch option afterward it; "Yard:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Medieval II Total State of war\medieval2.exe" --features.mod=mods/Third_Age_3
The master deviation in using the launch options through Steam or through a desktop shortcut, is that using information technology through Steam ever launches the mod, even if you don't desire to. Whereas using the desktop shortcut, launching the game volition requite you the vanilla game, not the mod.
It is, rather, a method that depends on how you, as a person, would similar it.
^ That says "featured." It should say "features" - with an S. (Thank you TotalWarHero)
5) At present, run Medieval II. Don't run an expansion - simply run the main game, the original. Launching an expanion appears to crash the game.
6) Of course, if you desire vanilla back, or want to launch another modern, just get rid of the launch option / change the folder name.
Installing Divide and Conquer (currently v2.ii)
Frequently Asked Questions / Common Bugfixes
0a) Before you lot do absolutely any troubleshooting whatsoever, end using that desktop shortcut. THEN read the rest of the FAQ.
0b) Also try running the installers as admin. In severe cases you lot may need to temporarily turn off your antivirus, although this is rare.
0c) Also try redownloading the installers if the game is simply just breaking. This isn't often an issue, particularly if you lot just quietly left them downloading overnight (by far the best option).
1) Multiplayer games are incompatible!
To play multiplayer you lot need:
- Same Os. No crossplay between Mac and Windows, I'm afraid. I tin can, however, betoken y'all to this group, which is a drove of Mac M2 players, some of which play TATW. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/MTW2mac
- Same method of M2. As far equally I know, if y'all have the retail version y'all tin't play with Steam owners. What y'all can do with the retail version is shove your production cardinal in Steam and install everything via Steam.
- Same version of M2. That is, patch 1.0.06.i or whatever the number is (information technology'south not big). This is very rarely a trouble and merely if you haven't touched your M2 game in yonks.
- Aforementioned mod. This shouldn't be a problem. However, if you're running TATW 3.ii you tin't play with people running TATW three.0 or with the Split up and Conquer submod (remind me, I need to put a section up on that
- Same method of launching it. This is almost certainly your problem. If you use the americas entrada your other players must exist using the americas campaign to launch. If y'all utilise a custom shortcut, and then must they.
two) Axethrowers crash the game when they fire!
AXETHROWER CRASH FIX:
http://world wide web.twcenter.cyberspace/forums/showthread.php?667436-Divide-and-Conquer-Version-0-52-Released&p=14826170&viewfull=1#post14826170
I'll write up a prissy department on information technology... sometime :P It works for both DaC and TATW, and probably also MOS too.
three) The game says "M2 has encountered an unspecified fault and volition now exit!"
Chances are y'all didn't install it properly. Or yous're using the .bat shortcut. Which you lot shouldn't exist. Either way, follow the guide to the letter.
four) I'm on a Mac, what should I do?
I tin can't give you much communication, every bit I run a Windows, merely have a look at this guide:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=601721028
5) Can I overwrite the 1000 Campaign (GC) instead of the mods?
Yep, merely it will spiral everything else up and:
i) It's fussy to install.
2) It's fussy to uninstall.
3) It's fussy to run.
iv) It's fussy and will overwrite the primary data for other campaigns; the Teutonic campaign, for instance, uses game settings, files, and STUFF from the main game... which is now TATW. (All my Castles look like Minas Morgul now, and my cities look similar those of the Galadhrim (Lothlorien)).
6) Anyone wanna play / you wanna play with me?
As for me, I'm a solitary SP AI-basher who generall is AFK far also often to play online. I can, notwithstanding, say that there are enough of others who will happily play with yous. To list them all would take ages, simply just search upwardly "3rd Age Total War" on Steam groups and see what you find.
7) Tin I accept lots of mods installed at the same time?
Using the --features.mods=mod/modname every bit your way of launching mods you can install as many mods equally y'all want. Practise note that using the rename method can break those campaigns so but instl all mods in their ain binder and utilize either the aforementioned launch options or the launcher that came with the mod upon install.
8) When I effort to run the files Windows just complains "What exercise you lot want to open this with?"
This is an odd bug, but the solution is usually rather uncomplicated. Become your files, rename them, and stuff a .exe on the cease. So yous finish upwards with
TATW_part1of3_whateverthefilenamesays_you-tin can-rename-this-for-all-I-care.exe
and then run every bit per usual.
